This is an exciting and challenging opportunity for a talented and organised individual to join our small but dedicated Foreshore Inspector team providing a high quality Foreshore patrol service serving our community who visit our beach and marine environment for water based activities and traditional seaside activities.
You will have a meticulous approach to the proper and effective promotion of our Beach, Foreshore and Inshore waters between Ferring (to the west) and Shoreham (to the East) including Worthing and its iconic Pier carrying out daily patrols on both quad bikes or on foot all year round and, on high powered safety boats or Jetski’s on inshore waters during the summer months.
You will have a marine background and will hold a RYA Powerboat Level II or other boating/marine qualification, ideally be RYA Rescue boat certified and hold a VHF Restricted Radio Licence (Marine) along with a full driving Licence (B+E categories) and hold a ML5 Marine Medical certificate or be able to obtain one.
You will work in liaison with the Emergency services, Marine Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the RNLI to provide a dedicated and professional service to our visitors who expect the Foreshore Service to support them when the need arises.
You will also deal with all types of emergencies such as missing persons, suspected ordnance washed up, along with marine animals and other animals who arrive on our shores from time to time including spillages and other items washed overboard during storms. You will be practical, level headed and be calm yet resolute under pressure.
You will also be working with community groups and other stakeholders who use and visit our beaches on environmentally driven projects and initiatives alongside local people, contractors, elected members and other agencies to improve the beach and coastal environment. You will also assist in helping ensure our extensive Foreshore events programme are successful, therefore ensuring that our Foreshore and inshore waters are well used by tourists and local residents.
You will work an annualised work pattern working a rotational 40 hours per week 5 days on and 2 days off during the summer (1st April to 30th September) and a four day on and four day off shift pattern of 7 hours per day during the winter (1st October to 31st March. The average is 32.1 hours per week and you will be expected to work weekends and public holidays as they fall on a rotational basis. Attendance at some out of hours incidents and emergencies is also required.
This is a varied and dynamic role, requiring a broad knowledge and experience of a range of areas including knowledge and experience of the marine (Coastal) environment including use of Safety Boats, Jet Ski’s (Personal Water Craft), Launching and recovery of boats from ramps using winch and tractor, enforcing byelaws and daily engagement and working with our community volunteers and partners.
